“Dirty Electricity” Meter and Filters.

Not for testing Washington politicians, this meter lets you detect levels of dirty power in home or office wiring, which can be corrected by installing Graham-Stetzer Filters (see below). The filters mitigate low frequency noise between 4 and 100 kilohertz, and this meter is designed to measure microsurges – voltage spikes – in that frequency range and display them as a numerical equivalent, in volts per second, of such noise..

No batteries are required – just plug it into a standard 2-or-3 prong or GFCI outlet and read the display. It works for 60 Hz, 120 Volt North American and 50 Hz, 240 Volt European systems (but an ordinary plug adapter is needed for European or other electrical outlets). By turning on various appliances (compact fluorescent bulbs, blenders, computers, laser printers, etc.) one at a time and taking readings, you can get a sense of which are the biggest polluters. The rule of thumb is that any outlet reading higher than 50 should get a filter – especially if it’s in an area frequently occupied (bedroom, office, etc.).

Wherever there are active dimmer switches, electric motors, fluorescent lights (including CFLs), transformers, and many other electric-noise producing products, you also find dirty power in the form of microsurges – spikes of higher-frequency on the normally extremely low frequency (ELF) power in our homes and offices. This higher-frequency noise has been associated with symptoms of electrosensitivity (skin rashes, insomnia, depression, headaches, inability to concentrate, memory problems, fatigue, etc.), and possibly even more serious diseases like cancer.
